Van Wyk Family Wines | Syrah | 2019
Van Wyk Family Wines | Syrah | 2019
When Constantia Glen winemaker, Justin Van Wyk, started this label, he had a desire to create honest South African wines that display a restrained old-world charm - this Syrah perfectly epitomises this desire. It is a pure and honest expression of the cool-climate vineyard it comes from in Elgin, while also bearing the hallmarks of Northern Rhône. Justin has employed 50% whole-bunches in fermentation to give this wine an excellent spice and floral kick, followed by 13 months maturing in French oak (15% new). Justin is known for his award winning Bordeaux blends at Constantia Glen, but this wine demonstrates that his brilliance in winemaking has no limits.
Nose & palate
Black fruits on the nose are joined by floral notes, black pepper and fynbos. A medium bodied palate of spice and bramble with good freshness, structure and persistent tannins.
Pairing
A Syrah loves some red meat. We love it with a simple beef stew.

About Van Wyk Family Wines
Justin Van Wyk creates absolute masterpieces as the winemaker at Constantia Glen, so naturally when we found out about his own label that he started in 2016 we were more than a little excited.
Justin cast his gaze outside Constantia and scoured the Cape Winelands for special vineyards that fit his vision to create honest South African wines that display a restrained old-world charm. His winemaking approach is gentle and non-invasive, resulting in wines that are pure expressions of the Cape. These are small batch wines that somehow still manage to provide incredible value, exhibiting the passion and modest elegance of a brilliant winemaker.
