Sijnn | White | 2021

HK$260.00

A truly unique and generous white blend from the unicorn of Malgas - and once again we are amazed by the versatility of Chenin (81% of the blend). Yes, there are other precisely selected grapes in here too (Verdelho (8%), Viognier (7%), and Roussane (4%)), which add some brilliant floral complexity, making the blend so unique, however, the Chenin alone has such a distinct stony fynbos character. It’s just one more example of how this wonderful grape takes on the characteristics of where it is grown - in this case the rugged southern tip of the Cape.

Winemaker Charla Haasbroek has employed some skin contact and 60% whole bunch pressing this vintage which has accentuated this fynbos characteristic and we love it. Charla says that the quality of the grapes from the bush vines that supply this wine is so high, her job is pretty much just to interfere as little as possible and make sure the fermentation, maturation and bottling process remains as simple and natural as possible so that nothing but the vineyard ends up in the bottle, and she does this really well. Wine fermented in 400L and 700L French oak barrels (10% new) for around 10 months on the lees, adding tremendous texture and balance. 14% Alcohol.

Nose & Palate

Beautiful limpid gold colour in your glass. Peach, apricot, and yellow apple on the nose. A rich and full bodied flavour profile, with peach, mandarin, and orange saline. Lovely minerality, enhancing the freshness and acidity of the wine, and notes of beeswax and honeyscukle. A good tannin structure coming from the slight skin contact. Drinking best 2021-2025.

Pairing

This wine can be paired with a variety of foods, but a favourite would be a mildly spicy butter chicken curry.

About the Winery

What started as a brief holiday on the south coast in Malgas for owners David & Rita Trafford, turned into a true unicorn in the Western Cape as the first growth appellation in the entire region. David and Rita saw the enormous potential in the Malgas soils and today that potential is resulting in some of the most highly acclaimed wines in South Africa.

With winemaker Charla Haasbroek at the reigns, Sijnn Wines are constantly experimenting and pushing the boundaries of winemaking. Their wines change in composition every vintage, blending Mediterranean varieties best suited to the soils in Malgas that are not commonly seen together or indeed at all in South Africa. There seems to be a soulful intuition that goes into these wines, creating something magical that could never be replicated.
